Can I Do Keto Without Eating Vegetables?

One of the things that might be confusing to you when you start a keto diet is whether or not you can eat your vegetables.  One thing to to remember is that the ketogenic way of eating is not the same as some other low carb diets.

You are not trying to eat a diet of primarily meat and cheese. However, in some cases, you don’t actually like vegetables that much, and would prefer to reduce them.

Here are a few things to be aware about doing keto without adding in vegetables.

Vegetables Help Increase Your Fiber

Before we take a look at some of the ways to do  the ketogenic diet without vegetables, let’s first look at why you should try to add vegetables to your diet.

Besides the fact that vegetables are really good for you and have a lot of the important nutrients you might not be able to get elsewhere, they also consist of a good amount of fiber.

Your fiber is already reduced by not having grains, oats, and other fiber-rich food when you are on an extremely low-carb diet. Fiber is something you need to help with constipation, which sometimes occurs with this way of eating.

Another tip if you want to mask the taste of greens, but still want the benefits of them, then try making a smoothie or green juice….

OR how about hiding your vegetables in some of your favorite foods… chopping them up into really small pieces for sauces, chili, meatballs or meatloaf just to name a few.

So, if you can handle veggies cooked or raw in even small amounts, it will be very helpful.

Watch Your Protein Content

Another reason vegetables are good for you is because they help to fill you up and keep you full, without adding more protein to your diet. Keto is not like a regular low-carb diet where you can eat unlimited amounts of meat and cheese.

As a matter of fact keto is not a high-protein diet at all. It is a high fat, low carb, moderate protein diet. You are going to have a moderate amount of protein, but if you don’t add vegetables to your meals, you are eating more animal protein that is dramatically going to increase your protein intake.

You will need to watch your protein levels carefully if you intend to do keto without a lot of vegetables.

How to do Keto Without Vegetables

If you are still determined about doing the keto diet without vegetables, first watch your fiber and protein content.

At the very least, try adding an avocado every day, since it contains more healthy fats while also supplying about 10 grams of fiber. This makes one avocado about 3-4 net carbs.

You should also try to add more raspberries, blackberries which are the lowest fruits in net carbs. In addition you can add nuts, seeds, psyllium husk and unsweetened coconut to your diet.

These will add in more fiber and other nutrients you are missing out on by not eating a lot of vegetables.
